CHARACTER CREATION

Character Creation

Character creation should be the most exciting part of applying to any group. For Freak Fest as with most art/rp groups we have two main components to submitting a character, the written and the visual. Freak Fest will also have a third component required to be submitted with your application which will be a character related writing prompt. This will be explained further down this page as we walk you through the different components of character creation for Freak Fest.

Visual Components

VISUAL COMPONENTS

The visual components are the first part of character creation that we’re going to address. To apply to Freak Fest there will be two visuals required.

THE BADGE

The first is the Freak Fest attendee badge seen here. On the badge we will need a character portrait and the character's name/nickname that they gave for their registration for Freak Fest (or the name of whoever they stole the badge from). Have fun with this, feel free to add stickers, charms, sharpie doodles, as long as the color and text on the badge itself is unchanged under all the chaos.

If you have any issues with getting the font (which is FB Agency) please reach out to admin (once our discord servers are open of course) and we would be happy to help you.

TYPES OF BADGES

VISITORS

Attendees or visitors are the most common type of attendee. They're simply here to have a good time dude. Learn about some aliens buy a tin foil hat, overpriced food. No pressure only vibes.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the life blood of the Fest, they handle set up, tear down, security, tech support, speaker accommodations, and more. You name it they do it. Volunteers will report to Kaleb Monroe, the volunteer supervisor for their role assignment at the beginning of the Fest. Assignments are given as needed but requests and expertise will be considered.

VENDORS

Vendors are businesses and individuals here to sell something. It could be food, services, surveillance equipment. This year there have been an overabundance of waterpipe salesmen?

Spot reservation for booths is now open. Use the sheet found here to reserve any ONE space by listing the booth’s name next to the appropriate number. Please also include your username in brackets. Make note that only food vendors can be placed in the red and orange spaces.

SPEAKERS

Speakers speak for themselves. To be a speaker means that the character is some kind of expert in a field Freak Fest would be interested in giving a platform. What this is needs to be included in your bio section. Possible topics are endless. They can range from government conspiracies to paranormal experiences, cryptid biology, fringe scientific theory, just to name a few.

If you make a speaker character you will be given the opportunity to host your own panel in Freak Fest or join one that's already been scheduled as an additional guest speaker. Panels may be attended by other members, but this isn't required. What is required is the reason they have a speaker badge (even if stolen), and their area of expertise if applicable.

FOR THOSE THAT DO WISH TO HOST OR JOIN A PANEL THAT OTHER MEMBERS CAN ATTEND:

Hosting an actual panel that members can attend, or joining an existing panel on our schedule is not a requirement for being a speaker at Freak Fest, but it is an option. For those interested we have a submission process detailed in the documents below. Please review the documents relevant to you carefully, and submit any panel pitches as soon as possible as panels will be held very soon after the group opens.

FULLBODY REFERENCE

The second visual component is a full body visual reference of the character. There are not many restrictions on this aside from the clothing being something period appropriate (meaning no apple watches, no lady gaga merch, ect. Think did this exist in the mid 90s), and that their Freak Fest badge be visible on their person. That’s it! We look forward to seeing your designs.

All visual components can be done by someone other than yourself, but you must be forthwith with this information, credit the creator, and have explicit permission to use the artwork from the artist for this group or as you wish.

Written Components

WRITTEN COMPONENTS

The second part of character creation for Freak Fest is the written portion. This is a mix of relevant information about the character ranging from basic things such as their age, their name, their height, to in depth descriptions of their personality and backstory. Below we have the required fields for this portion listed with a brief description of each.

Name:

Your character's name, nickname, or what they might most commonly go by.

View:

Is your character a believer? a skeptic? something between?

Height:

Your character’s height, this can be in inches or cm, but be aware the group generally refers to things in the imperial system of measurement.

Age:

Your character’s age as of 1994, characters cannot be younger than 20.

Class:

Simply list the class you’ve chosen for your character. if you like you can include a detailed description of the class here as well, we might even suggest it if you feel you’ll have a hard time remembering the details.

For any class with specific build options the options you've selected for the character MUST be specified.

Stats:

In Freak Fest there are 4 main stats, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Social. At the beginning of the group you have 3 stat points to place in any of these stats. Those stat points will apply as a flat bonus to appropriate rolls. The highest you can have in any stat is 6. (When recording stats make sure to also account for any stats awarded by your class.)

Combat Skills (optional):

This section is where you can list your characters skill ranks if you have selected any. Coming into Freak Fest players have 2 ranks per character to apply to any step of our skill tree paths they like, as long as there is a linear connection from the starting rank of course. Our skill tree can be found here with detailed information on all our combat skills.

This is an completely optional category because while everyone has two ranks to place on the skill tree you are not required to place all or any of them. If you opt out of any of your ranks however make sure to make note of it in your application because upon acceptance you’ll be getting the currency equivalent of those relinquished ranks put directly into your coffer!

Personality:

Personality is a brief description of your character's personality and perhaps their reasoning behind it if you want to get more in depth. If your biographical section is robust enough then a simple listing of traits is just fine.

Bio:

This is a very important part of the app, this is where you tell us who your character is and where they came from. Tell us a story, and have fun with it. This section does not have to be lengthy to be effective, think quality over anything else. (Though that doesn’t mean we discourage those that write long form, so don’t be nervous, just write something you enjoy.)

The only required content:  Within your bio or as a subsection we want to see the way they heard of Freak Fest, why they decided to go, and maybe what the expect from their time at the Fest. (A mention of how they got their badge and how they're getting there/where they're coming from is a nice bonus.)

Content warnings are required for any sensitive and/or distressing content within your character's application.

SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER: Make sure that you do your due diligence in researching any topics you are including, especially those regarding mental illness, disability, races, religions, and cultures you might not be familiar with. Even those you feel confident in writing we encourage you to review with care before submission. How respectfully writers handle nuanced topics within their characters will be a huge part of our consideration in character review.

Trivia (optional):

Here you can list extra trivia that might not have fit neatly into the rest of the app. Does your character have a cat? An allergy to peanuts? A shadow figure in a top hat following them that gets closer every time they accidently look at him directly? Can they drive stick?

We suggest listing at least 3-5 pieces of trivia.

RP Preferences:

This can be in any format, but we suggest that members include their timezone, prefered rp style (i.e. lit, script, ect), and comfort level with common topics such as shipping, conflict, and the like. Most importantly list any content you are NOT comfortable with here.  â€‹

Writing Prompt

MINDSCAPE WRITING PROMPT

The third part of character creation is a writing prompt, this writing prompt will be required by all those applying. This prompt will be a mindscape description specific to the character you’re bringing in. In it you will describe the mind space of your character and its specific aspects as if it were a place of its own affected by the life your character has lived, the person they are, and perhaps the secrets they bury deep down. Unless they don’t have any- then maybe it’s just a wonderful field of flowers! Trees made of picture frames!

There is no minimum or maximum length requirement, what is important to us is clarity of concept. Below you will find two examples of the completed writing prompt as inspiration. The admin team will be more than willing to give further guidance and assistance once the group pre server opens.

EXAMPLE 01

Isaiah is the ideal soldier: devoted, loyal, unwavering in all forms. So when he's given the coordinates, he drops the bombs. He doesn't question that the target is correct. The Air Force is here to save people. The Americans are the good guys. He's the good guy. Right?

EXAMPLE 02

Abe is a very simple man. Contemplative, shy, if not downright demure, he has devoted his entire life to the priesthood. Nothing is more important than giving his entire life to God, and if he were to have even a single misstep into sin...that's just not an option.

Submission

SUBMISSION

Submitting your application will take place over discord once the group pre-server is opened. We suggest using google docs or carrd for the written portion of your application.
